The Best Time of Day for Outdoor Family Photos | Family Photographer Bridgewater, MA
One of the most common questions I get is: When is the best time of day to capture outdoor family photos? My goal as your South Shore Family Photographer is to place you in the most flattering light, ensuring your family’s memories are beautifully preserved.
Many people assume that the brightest part of the day is ideal because of the abundant light. While it’s not necessarily a deal breaker, midday sun can be tricky. When the sun is high in the sky, it creates deep shadows under the eyes, nose, and chin, which can lead to harsh and unflattering images.
As your South Shore Family Photographer, here are my recommendations for the best times to schedule your session:
• Park with trees – About one hour after sunrise or one hour before sunset
• Large field with trees in the distance – About 30 minutes after sunrise or 30 minutes before sunset
• Ocean/beach – As close to sunrise or sunset as possible
Why these times? It’s all about the golden hour—that magical time shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is lower in the sky. This creates soft, warm, and diffused light that flatters skin tones and enhances natural beauty.
Of course, we all know that New England weather can be unpredictable! If we happen to have full cloud coverage, don’t worry—clouds act like a giant softbox, creating even, beautifully diffused light. In fact, these beach images were taken during golden hour on a cloudy day, and the result was a dreamy, soft glow that made for stunning photos.
